How to get your Amateur Radio License
The following Frequently Asked Questions may assist you on your journey toward getting your Amateur Radio License.
Steps to Get Licensed
To obtain an amateur radio license in the U.S., you must pass an examination administered by a team of Volunteer Examiners (VEs).
License Classes
There are three FCC license levels:
- Technician – Entry level; grants access to many VHF/UHF bands and limited HF privileges.
- General – Provides broader HF operating privileges.
- Amateur Extra – Grants access to all amateur radio frequencies.
You must pass each level in order to advance to the next.
Exam Content
The Technician Class exam consists of 35 questions drawn from a pool of official FCC question pools. Topics include rules, operating procedures, and basic radio theory.
Study Resources
You can prepare using online practice exams and study guides. Recommended resources include:
Exam and FCC Fees
- VE Exam Fee: Typically $15, paid directly to the VE team when you test.
- FCC Application Fee: A $35 fee applies to new licenses, renewals, rule waivers, and applications requesting new vanity call signs. This fee is charged by the FCC and is separate from the VE exam fee.
