CARP Members Loaded for Bear for the 2010 ARRL June VHF QSO Party

The Clovis Amateur Radio Pioneers  participated in the 2010 ARRL June VHF QSO Party. Patrick May KI6QOH, Rob Mavis AE6GE and John Mitchell N7SLX and son were in attendance.

The contest site was located on Black Mountain in grid CM95 in the Santa Barbara Section. The site is located on a communications site hilltop in the rural Los Padres National Forest which was a nice leisure 3 1/2 hour drive from Fresno. While there was no available power and no facilities, there was a nicely paved road all the way to the top of the hill.

Saturday morning during setup the team was paid a visit by a bear.  Not to be detoured the team continued on with setup, after the bear left of course,  and was ready by the start of the contest.

The site turned out to be an ok VHF contest site due to the distance from any population center. However, it was excellent for 6 meters.  During the contest the 6 meter station racked up 125 QSOs in 80 grids! Locations contacted were Alaska, Canada, across the the US and the East Coast.

Thanks to those who made the event possible by the way of equipment loans:  Dave Smith W6TE, Pat Fennacy W6YEP, Steve Stoehr N6JXL, Ray Harkings KB6LQV, Dave Dansby NI6M

Thai hams authorized to use 6-meters during CQWW VHF contest

Thai radio amateurs have been granted temporary permission to use the 6-metre (50-54MHz) amateur band for the first time in almost two decades by the Thai regulator, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). This will allow Thai amateur radio operators to operate during the CQ Worldwide VHF contest for 48 hours on July 17-18, 2010. The last time such permission had been granted was in 1992 during the Southeast Asia Net convention staged in Chiang Mai that year. The only other sanctioned six-metre operation in Thailand had been by the late co-founder of RAST, Gen Kamchai Chotikul, HS1WR (SK), in the late 1970s and early 1980s, according to Champ, E21EIC.
