Fresno EMCOMM Report for January 2010

December 26, 2009

December 26, 2009-  Well I hope everyone had Happy Holidays and are looking forward to a prosperous New Year!  As is usual for the November/December Season, we only managed 1 meeting on 10 December, however we made a good head start on the next year.  First we discussed our varied accomplishments and mused on those that did not quite hit the mark.  Then we began to set our preliminary goals for 2010.

Our successes seemed small but will bring fruit in the future. Members is one of our good things.  Although we lost to the economy (people working longer hours), migration away and even a SK, we still have grown.  Especially in geography.  We are centered in Fresno and Clovis, but Fresno County encompasses all the way from Coalinga to Prather and beyond!  We can now boast coverage in Squaw Valley, Reedley, Sanger, Selma, Friant, Kerman, Coalinga and West Fresno.  They are one’s and two’s but this is good growth.  We have more Technical support now also, with more digital interest.  This will be more important in the near future.

Our website (which has attracted attention from as far as Alaska) Now has a new face, thank you Steve NA6G, our webmaster.  We are trying to improve our links and net postings for this end of the valley.  We welcome any suggestions, so stop by and drop us a note.

Our Alert procedures and administration is improving also.  James KI6IHB worked very hard at compiling a draft of our previously loose procedures.  We are hoping to have them set in stone come January.  This will allow us to train and break in best practices to facilitate training, especially ‘Last Minute’ Volunteers.  The details are always time consuming.

Skywarn Recognition Day was pretty good I was told!  Bruce KD6DRU and the gang down in Kings County had a great time.  In fact, you may see something in CQ about them.  CQ had shown interest before the event and wanted personal takes on it.  They had some rough conditions but were able to make quite a few contacts with other weather stations.  Oh if you haven’t heard, Skywarn Net is now at 1900 hrs on Wednesdays on the 146.88 repeater, negative offset, and 103.5  PL.

I attended the Pacific division ‘Directors’ Meeting, in Livermore.  The EmComm ARES Level 1 training was discussed.  It seems we are not the only ones offering local courses.  This is great as we can compare notes and improve it.  Tulare will be running another class ending in February.  A couple of Saturdays, take your test and you can get your certification.  Contact Hal KC5LUB by email: for details.

Next Meeting will be regular date and time and we are discussing our goals for 2010.  Come on down and volunteer to help with a project.  We are going to be improving our capabilities with the hospitals Red Cross and Salvation Army and having fun while we do it.  Bring your ideas, bring your concerns and lend a hand.  The more hands, the less work!

In closing please let me give thanks for all the help in 2009 and I want to wish every one a healthy and prosperous 2010, Happy Hamming! 73,  Dan AE6SX
