Operate the June VHF QSO Party for CARP from Home

This year CARP for the ARRL June VHF QSO Party will again concentrate on the combined Club Competition Score. This is a combined score of all logs submitted for the contest with a club affiliation.

Each log submitted has a field to designate which club you are associated with. When you submit your log for the June VHF QSO Party, put down Clovis Amateur Radio Pioneers as your club. Once published not only will your log be individually ranked, but all the logs submitted for the club will be combined for a total Club Score for the contest.

Whether you work from your home station, drive to a mountain top or drive around as a rover, you can submit your logs to help build the combined club score for the contest!Even if you only make a few contacts from home on FM, be sure to submit a log to help the club score.

Lets get some friendly competition going within the club and with the other clubs. If you have any questions or need any assistance with logging, rules or operation, let us know and we can help. info@k6arp.org

Contest rules can be found at http://www.arrl.org/june-vhf-qso-party.

Central Valley Transmitter Hunters
“T Hunt” 2-23-2013

WJ6Y, having won the previous hunt I had the dubious pleasure of being the fox for this month’s T Hunt. Eight teams showed up for the February 2013 Central Valley Transmitter Hunters (CVTH) T Hunt. After some question as to the correct start time, all eight teams were off like a herd of hams pursuing the hidden transmitter. My first clue as to how serious some of the hunters are was when two vehicles blew past my hiding spot following the transmitters melodious signal. A short while later in a cloud of dust, the first vehicle arrived at ground zero. But the hunt was not over as a second very low power transmitter had been hidden nearby and required being found before anyone could claim victory. A mad dash with handheld beams resulted in the days first place winner…..or did it? The winner would be decided later by a coin toss after much discussion.

Feb 23 T-Hunt – WJ6Y “The Fox”

The main transmitter proved a challenge for a couple of teams, but the second transmitter proved very elusive for others. One by one the teams were able to sigh in relief as they spotted the trashy transmitter. The results below were calculated by my trusty cohort, W6KKO.

I hope everyone had a good time and even more are able to attend the next hunt. This is indeed a great way to practice your hunting skills and network with fellow hams.

– John Youngquist, WJ6Y

  • Feb 23 T-Hunt – Mike KD6LDA with the “Trashy Fox”

Overall winner via coin flip is Tom (N6MQG).

  • I believe John (K6MI) found both transmitters before Duane did, so he’s the winner for Class 2.
  • No one competed in Class 3.
  • Duane (KI6QEL) may have had the fewest miles overall @ 9.3 miles
  • Rob (AE6GE) might of had the most miles 🙂
  • Eight total teams participated, (Eight vehicles and 13 operators)
  • Tom (N6MQG) will be the fox for the next hunt on Saturday May 11th
  • Winners by classification:
    • Class 1
      • Winner (By a coin flip) : Tom (N6MQG) and Steve (N6JXL) Team #4
      • 2nd place: Mike (KG6MSV) and Marty (K6KTP) Team #1
    • Class 2
      • Winner : John (K6MI) Team #6
      • 2nd place: Duane (KI6QEL) Team #5

W6YDE Gives Coax Connector Soldering Presentation

Mike W6YDE talking about his massive soldering iron

At the February CARP meeting Mike W6YDE gave a presentation on his method for soldering PL-259 connectors. The presentation included a demonstration where Mike walked through the process of installing a PL-259 connector on a piece of LMR-400 cable. The talk included a wealth of information from his experience and knowledge.

Attendees looking on and listening intently to Mike’s presentation.

Mike also introduced us to a two-piece solder only style Type N Connector that is similar to the PL-259. Those of you who have had the experience of assembling the traditional crimp or compression style Type N connector know how excited some of us got at the mention of the new simple style connector. While Mike said he obtained the connectors from Dayton Hamvention, I have located a company online that carries them. Max-Gain Systems out of Georgia [http://www.mgs4u.com/RF-adapters.htm], part number i303

Mike covered a lot more than just soldering connectors.

Mike’s presentation covered much more than just the demonstration of soldering the connector. Other topics covered were tools, solder and coax. He also discussed what tools he used and his reasoning why. Mike also showed off his massive soldering iron and explained the need for mass in the soldering iron for heat transference. He also explained some of the differences in types of coax and gave some pros and cons of them.

Thanks Mike for an excellent interesting and informative presentation!
