N6EY to join HRD staff; Updates Public Beta; SAM Callsign CD is ready for purchase

HRD Software, LLC announced today that Jason Boyer, N6EY, will be joining the Ham Radio Deluxe team to do sales, support and QA on the HRD project.

Many hams know Jason from his tenure the past 3 ½ years at M2 Antennas in Fresno, California. Prior to M2, he worked in the telecommunications field after a career in the United States Navy as an avionics technician. Jason’s past and amateur radio activities include serving in Navy-Marine Corps MARS as both a civilian volunteer and on active duty, VHF/UHF weak signal, and CW and digital modes on HF. His wife and two of his daughters also carry on the amateur radio tradition.

Rick Ruhl, W4PC, said, “HRD is going to increase phone support hours to 10 AM to 7PM, ET, M-F. Current HRD Tech Support Manager, KB3NPH, will handle the East Coast and European calls while Jason will handle the West Coast and Asian/Pacific calls. The long term plan is to have 24/7 support M-F with a couple more ham radio support people on the other side of the world.”

HRD continues to grow and add more hams to the staff.

The SAM Callbook CD for summer 2014 is now available for ordering on the website. The CD will ship on the 4th of April to current subscribers and anyone who purchases one of the options from the website. Pricing will stay the same as when VIS was supplying the CD.

The company also released Ham Radio Deluxe Version 6.2 (Public Beta 3.3 for paid users). The sharp-eyed HRD users are always great in helping find the ‘gotchas’ in a new version. The final release date is not set, since a major goal will be the addition of JT9/65 and HF host mode support for the PK-232/SC+ and other Timewave TNCs.

Fresno Citizen’s Police Academy Begins January 15

CITIZEN’S POLICE ACADEMY BEGINS JANUARY 15 – REGISTRATION IS OPEN

Invitation from Chief Dyer: On behalf of the Fresno Police Department, I would like to invite those of you who live or work in the City of Fresno to participate in the Citizen’s Police Academy. This valuable program is offered with the goal of enhancing, through education, the relationship between the Fresno Police Department and the citizens we protect and serve. The course is not only educational, it is fun and exciting. In addition to sessions in the classroom, you will tour our most interesting facilities and enjoy hands-on experiences with the law enforcement tools used by our officers. Classroom topics include: Patrol Procedures, Officer Involved Shootings, Homicide, Traffic Enforcement, Gangs, and others. You will tour our Dispatch Center, Crime Scene Bureau (CSI), and test your skills on the Use of Force and Driving Simulators that we train our officers on. You will go to our K-9 and Mounted Patrol facility for demonstrations, to our Skywatch hanger to see how our Air Support Unit works, and you’ll take a tour of the Fresno County Jail. One of the favorite classes is at the Peace Officer’s Range, where you will have the opportunity to shoot four different types of Fresno Police Department service weapons currently in use in the field. I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to come and get to know how the Department operates and meet the men and women who protect your city. I also hope that upon completion of the course, you may want to consider continuing your involvement with the Fresno Police Department by participating in one or more of the many opportunities for which you will be uniquely qualified. Jerry Dyer, Chief of Police

Classes begin January 15th and meet every Wednesday night for 12 weeks from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Participants will also be introduced to opportunities in the Citizens on Patrol (COP) program. The classes are held at the Fresno Police Department’s main training room in the Annex Building located at 2326 Fresno Street, between “M” and “N”, or other FPD facilities. Details are attached. For additional information or an application form, contact Lindsay.Hughes@Fresno.gov or call 621-6228.

M2 Open House Cancelled for 2014

January 10, 2014

Just received this from M2:

Regarding M2’s Annual Open House and Bar-B-Q

For the past 15 years, M2 has hosted an Annual Open House and Bar-B-Q. We greatly appreciate all of the support shown each year as the event grows in popularity and enjoy seeing our friends, who we’ve come to regard as extended family.

Regrettably, schedule and production commitments prevent us from putting on an open house this year.

We realize that many look forward to this event each year. We’ll truly miss putting on the event, and most of all, getting to see our friends in the amateur radio community. We at M2 thank you for your understanding.

CARP 2-meter Repeater Antenna Upgraded

On Saturday October 26, 2013 we performed some maintenance on the CARP Repeater System. The 2-meter repeater antenna was replaced by a Telewave 4-bay antenna at 140′ on the tower. In addition to the installation of the new antenna some cleanup of the site and the following was accomplished:

Enabled PL encode on 147.675. PL encode has been active for the 444.725 machine for a while. With PL encode turned on your radio, you will only hear the CARP repeater and eliminates the grunge and intermod you receive when monitoring the repeater frequency.

Configured PL encode to only occur during active signal input. When PL encode is enabled on your radio, IDs will be muted and the squelch crash heard when the radio un-keys is essentially eliminated.

Repeaters and controller were tuned and adjusted.

Thanks to the crew that came up for all the help:

  • Bill KG6ALK
  • Rob AE6GE
  • Mark N6IB
  • Nino AB6MJ
  • Tom N6MQG
  • Ron N6MTS
  • Greg KJ6OUI

With the modifications and adjustments to the 147.675 repeater we should have increased coverage and fill-in for the valley. While you are out around the valley please test the repeater with both your mobile and if possible HT to see how well and where the machine plays. Please report your findings to us at info@k6arp.org.
