CARP Helps with Communications for Bicycle Fundraising event in Sanger
Saturday January 28, 2012 members of the Clovis Amateur Radio Pioneers (CARP) assisted the Fresno County Bicycling Coalition (FCBC) with communications on a benefit bicycle ride. The Breaths for Evan benefit was to help the family of a child with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Sadly the child had passed prior to the event, but organizers continued with the event to not only raise money for the family but also for SMA research.
The ride consisted of two routes that began and finished at theSangerYouthCenter. CARP provided the needed communication betweenWintonParkand theSangerYouthCenter.WintonParkis in the foothills below Pine Flat dam and has no cell phone coverage cutting off the rest stop personnel from the event. The CARP repeater played well into the location and was instrumental in the communications effort.
The event went off without much trouble. In the beginning there was a little issue with logistics atWintonPark, but CARP communications personnel were able to easily handle the radio traffic which allowed the powers that be to sort the issue out in short order.
“Thank you to Tom [N6MQG] and to CARP on such short notice for all you help. The event may have not happened it if weren’t for you” said Larry Peer, one of the organizers for the event.
As a thank you, the volunteers were treated to an excellent Tri-Tip dinner after the event.
Tom N6MQG initiated the contact between the FCBC and CARP. Rob Mavis AE6GE organized and got the volunteers to help with communications in only a few days.
The event was handled professionally by these members of CARP: Rob Mavis AE6GE, Patrick May K6BRW and Casey Hamlin KJ6SSB.
This was not only an excellent opportunity for amateur radio to provide one of its core services to an event in the community, but also an opportunity for us to provide needed services a worthy cause.
