FRESNO EMCOMM – ARES/RACES Jan 2010

December 26, 2009-  Well I hope everyone had Happy Holidays and are looking forward to a prosperous New Year!  As is usual for the November/December Season, we only managed 1 meeting on 10 December, however we made a good head start on the next year.  First we discussed our varied accomplishments and mused on those that did not quite hit the mark.  Then we began to set our preliminary goals for 2010.

MARS Gets New Name As It Fine Tunes Mission

On Wednesday, December 23, the Department of Defense (DoD) issued an Instruction concerning MARS, effective immediately. This Instruction gives the three MARS services — Army, Air Force and Navy/Marine Corps — a new focus on homeland security and a new name: Military Auxiliary Radio System. The Instruction is the first major revision to MARS since January 26, 1988 — as such, the first revision since the 9/11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina, two major events that changed the way Amateur Radio dealt with emergency communications.

When a semi truck and trailer rolled and crashed in Logan Canyon Wednesday morning, a passing motorist stopped to help when the rig’s wheels were still spinning and managed to notify emergency dispatchers in an area of national forest where cell phone reception is nonexistent.

For the final time this year, we again take up the issue of the appropriate use of Amateur Radio: the extent to which radio amateurs may (and should) provide communications on behalf of others, particularly their employers.

The Amateur Radio Service has a well-deserved reputation for taking the FCC rules seriously, so it is not surprising that the subject of “pecuniary interest” has attracted a lot of attention and discussion. The relevant rules have not changed since 1993, but recent years have seen growing interest in the use of Amateur Radio as an alternative, supplemental, or backup communications medium by commercial, non-profit and government entities. SKYWARN Recognition Day 2009

SKYWARN Recognition Day 2009 – Hanford, CA

SKYWARN Recognition Day (SRD) was developed in 1999 by the National Weather Service and the American Radio Relay League. It celebrates the contributions that volunteer SKYWARN radio operators make to the National Weather Service. During the day SKYWARN operators visit NWS offices and contact other radio operators across the world.

CARP Christmas Party

CARP Christmas Party
