CARP Helps the Morning Drive Net with Repeater System

The Morning Drive Net is held weekday mornings from 7:30 am to 8:00 am and provides weather and traffic information for the local morning commute. For the last few days while , the Fresno Amateur Radio Club  W6TO repeater is experiencing technical difficulties, the net has been held on the CARP repeater system.

Previously when the FARC repeater was experiencing technical difficulties, CARP has allowed the Morning Drive Net control operators to temporarily move the net the CARP repeater system. CARP is dedicated to assisting not only the public but also the ham community. Continue Reading »

Community Groups Donate Disaster Units to Alameda

The city of Alameda will soon gain two new mobile disaster units to manage earthquakes and other large-scale disasters. The Community of Harbor Bay Association and the Harbor Bay Business Association will present the units to the city in a ceremony on Saturday.

The special trailers are the first of their kind in Alameda. They contain medical supplies, search and rescue tools and radio communication devices, designed to be used by Alameda’s Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and the Amateur Radio Club of Alameda (ARCA) in a disaster.

Amateur Radio Operators Help Galveston Residents Communicate

GALVESTON — One elderly lady endured Hurricane Ike’s wrath. She was sitting in her modest home located near the San Luis hotel — alone in the dark. Her husband was hundreds of miles away in Utah, worried and unable to reach her as landline and cell phone links went offline one by one. Ike ruthlessly destroyed telephone lines and damaged numerous cell towers, and left many others without operating power. The result: a nearly complete communications blackout rarely experienced by 21st century America.

Ham Radio Shows It’s Gray

FRAMINGHAM – The spinning radio dial yielded pops and crackles, blips of Morse code from a ham radio operator in the Midwest, a warbling voice in a German accent, and, finally, a friend.

“CQ, CQ, CQ,” came the call, strong and clear, amateur-radio shorthand for a general invitation to speak to anybody who’s listening.

“This is Whiskey-1-Foxtrot-Yankee,” replied Sumner Weisman in a smooth voice, giving his radio club’s call letters, W1FY, assigned by the US government. “We’re the Framingham Amateur Radio Association.”

Hiker Summons Help with Ham Radio

EVERETT, WA — A series of dots and dashes bouncing off the ionosphere Sunday helped save a hiker stranded on Buck Creek Pass east of Glacier Peak.

The hiker, who broke his leg, used a low-voltage portable radio and Morse code to send out a call to help.

Six hundred miles away, in Bozeman, Mont., Robert Williams was testing his ham radio Sunday when he heard the call signal, “W-7-A-U.”
