CARP Gives Morning Drive Net a Helping Hand

Over the last several weeks the Morning Drive Net has been using the CARP repeater system as its alternate venue. The Fresno Amateur Radio Club W6TO repeater, normally the home of the net, has been experiencing some intermittent interference issues as of late. When the interference prevents the net from being held on the FARC repeater, they move the net to the CARP repeater system at 147.675 MHz and 444.725 MHz with a PL of 141.3 hz. Continue Reading »

HAM radio plays Good Samaritan at Chowpatty

A group of HAM radio operators worked quietly, resolutely and efficiently at Girgaum Chowpatty on Sunday preventing drownings, reuniting lost children with their families and handling all the expected and unexpected events that crowds of this magnitude inadvertently create.

70 Years of Surfing the World’s Radio Waves

Tom Sanders was 15 the first time he encountered the wonders of amateur radio. A friend of his had built a “bootleg,” or unlicensed system in his garage.

“Here was this black box with a couple of tubes sticking out of it,” Sanders said. “He picked up the microphone and began talking into it, and here was this guy talking back to him. … I said I had to do that.”

The year was 1938, long before Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and crew launched the computer revolution from garages and back rooms. Changes in the communication industry wrought by ham radio buffs like Sanders were no less revolutionary.

‘Cognitive Radios’ to Improve Wireless Devices

Researchers are developing intelligent radios that can sense their surroundings and adjust their mode of operation accordingly.

Dubbed ‘cognitive radios’, the technology is expected to reach the market within five years, finding uses in public safety devices and wireless networks.

Cognitive radios build on the concept of ‘software defined radio’, in which most functions in a radio device are performed by software-controlled digital electronic circuits.
