When Bennett and Judy Haman saw the devastation and destruction caused by the Southern California wildfires, they knew they had to do something to help the thousands of victims whose lives were shattered by the fires.

“I think anytime you see a fire its scary, but I think the thoughts are more with the people who’ve lost their homes, who have no home to go back to”,said Judy Haman.

So they’re packing up and getting ready to head south on Monday.

They don’t make them like my friend Hank makes them.

Hank Kress is an old-time ham radio operator who’s never been pleased with factory-made transmitters. He’s a practitioner of the slowly disappearing art of creating his own radios. There was a time, back in the early to mid-20th Century, when this would not have been unusual, when most hams built their own radios. Now, however, state-of-the-art circuits call for manufacturing skills, techniques and parts that few amateurs have.

Folks Downriver might know Hank from his years running Kress Marine in Allen Park or as the former organist at St. Francis Cabrini church in Allen Park. He lived in Allen Park from 1955 until 1980. I know Hank because we are both hams. Hank was licensed by the Federal Communications Commission as a radio amateur in 1959. Me too. His call sign is K8KBW. Mine is K8PSV. Phonetically, he’s “Kilowatt Eight Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey.” I’m “Kilowatt Eight Pure Smirnoff Vodka.”

Amateur Radio Clubs of the Fresno/Clovis Area Join to Provide Needed Communications the the ADA Step Out walk/run

The Clovis Amateur Radio Pioneers (CARP) with the assistance of members from Fresno Amateur Radio Club (FARC) and Fresno ARES provided communications for the American Diabetes Association’s second annual Step Out to Fight Diabetes walk/run Saturday October 13th at Woodward Park.

I would like to extend gracious thanks to Steve Bassett-NA6G and Dan Pruitt-AE6SX for taking the time to help with communications for this event. This makes the second joint effort this year between CARP, FARC and Fresno ARES. These events have been great successes at fostering goodwill and communications between the local amateur radio clubs as well as providing excellent services to the community.

WINCHESTER – CG Radio Club members celebrated the 60th birthday of the founding of their ham radio club at The Winchester Center Fire Department on Saturday.

Ham radio operators communicate with emergency responders and talk with other ham radio operator in the world, members said.

“Because it’s our birthday, we are hoping to talk to ham radio operators in each of the 50 states,” said club member David Wyatt, 50, the district emergency coordinator for Region 5 in Connecticut. The technology enables people to communicate with people from other cultures.

SALT SPRINGS – The dials and knobs on the unworkable radio his brother kept under his bed fascinated the little boy.

Each day when his older brother left for school, the 4-year-old played with the controls and put his ear to the speaker, just imagining what might come out.

In a little room in his home by Lake Kerr, 84-year-old John Williams still has an ear to the radio. The difference is that a complicated array of equipment in the small room and a 100-foot tall antenna that dwarfs his modest home allow him to communicate with far-flung spots around the globe.

As the Silver Springs Radio Club celebrates its 60th anniversary this week, Williams is the only surviving founding member. Bypass surgeries and a stroke have slowed him, but the ham radio operator harbors no thoughts of a final transmission.

PRESCOTT, Ariz. — Nostalgic for simpler days, retired astrophysicist Chuck Adams is translating classics of boys’ lit into a language he fears is going the way of kit radios and marbles: Morse code.

Holed up in his high-desert home crammed with computers, radio receivers and a very patient wife, Mr. Adams uses homemade software to download online books with expired copyrights, convert the typed words into Morse code tones and record them on compact discs he sells on the Internet.

So far, Mr. Adams says he has sold or donated thousands of Morse versions of such novels as Edgar Rice Burroughs’s “At the Earth’s Core,” Daniel Defoe’s “Robinson Crusoe,” and H.G. Wells’s “The Time Machine.” In about an hour his software can take any book in the public domain and turn it into a string of digital dits and dahs; last weekend, he turned out a version of F. SANGAT SINGH remembers the moment 50 years ago when Man placed the first object to orbit around Earth. IT was a defining moment in the history of the world. Fifty years ago today, on October 4, 1957 at 19:28:04 GMT, the world was stunned when Sputnik 1 became the first man-made object to orbit Earth.

The Space Age had begun, with an eruption of blinding flames and the thundering roar of R7 rocket engines on the Kazakh steppes to put Sputnik 1 into orbit.

Richard Garriott, KE5QNX, son of Owen Garriott, W5LFL, will be launching into space and living aboard the International Space Station in October 2008 as a client of Space Adventures. Owen Garriott operated the world’s first Amateur Radio Station from space, W5LFL, as part of the Spacelab mission on the space shuttle Columbia (STS-9) in 1983; he is on the Astronaut Advisory Board of Space Adventures. Space Adventures is a company that allows private citizens the chance for space travel on Russian Soyuz spacecraft at an estimated cost of $30-55 million per person. Richard, who is Space Adventures vice chairman, has applied for his grandfather’s call sign, W5KWQ.

First contact: Sputnik

To say the least, it was incredible. The news relayed by the voice on the other end of the phone line hit the president of the San Gabriel Valley Radio Club like a blow to the head. Too incredible, Henry Richter hoped, to be true.

Hope was something Richter knew quite well. It went with the job. Not only as president of a local ham radio club; although you always hoped the guy on the other side of the world talking to you over the shortwave would have something interesting to say. No, Richter’s familiarity with hope came as a charter member of the nascent space exploration industry.
