Greg Davis’ Eagle Scout project might have helped him win the top national award for an amateur ham radio operator younger than 21.

Davis, 17, won the 150,000-member National Association for Amateur Radio (ARRL) Award for installing ham radio antennas at Red Cross evacuation shelters. Ham radio operators often are the first to have communications, provide damage assessment and share the status of their communities in the aftermath of a disaster.

Congressman Mike Ross Hams it Up

Political Notebook: Mike Ross hams it up
by Aaron Sadler
Arkansas News Bureau

WASHINGTON – Some of Rep. Mike Ross’ best prep work for Congress came thanks to a copper wire strung up between trees in his backyard.

Ross, D-Prescott, says his interest in amateur radio as a teenager helped him develop social skills and communication skills he uses today as a congressman.

Ross is one of just two licensed ham radio operators in Congress. As such he has championed bills important to the industry and praised his amateur radio counterparts for their work during emergencies.

CLARKS SUMMIT – Ed Moody uses his 65-foot amateur radio tower to broadcast what he wants, whenever he wants and he would like to keep it that way.

On Tuesday night, the Clarks Summit Zoning Hearing Board made it harder for Mr. Moody to stay on the air.

By a 3- 0 vote, the Zoning Board said a borough code enforcement officer did the right thing by citing Mr. Moody for his free-standing antenna.

Operators Provide Public Service

by Dave Casadei, Independent Newspapers
Newszap.com

Some Sun City West [AZ] residents are growing restless over the many Ham radio antennas lining the roofs of homes in their senior communities.

Their angst is two-fold. They believe the lengthy antennas detract from the look of their neighborhood and claim they interfere with other home electronic equipment, including televisions, radios, phones and computers.

“They (antennas) do nothing but lower property values and create chaos in our pristine community,” Sun City West resident Ron McCollor said.

South Florida HAM’s Provide Vital Link

South Florida HAM’s provide vital link for hurricane victims
WPTV.com – Florida

The radio squeals. “Uh, we’re getting reports of some roof and some building damage, it arrived at a Category 5.” From inside his quaint two bedroom home in Stuart, David Millard communicates with the world. And often, more importantly, the world communicates with him.

Millard is part of a HAM radio network that specializes in hurricane reporting and response. As they and he watched Hurricane Felix slam into Nicaragua, Millard’s fellow radio operators were broadcasting the deteriorating conditions in real-time to aid forecasters. “Giving the pressure, the wind speed.. and so forth,” he explains, “and then they relay that to the Hurricane Center.”
