To help celebrate the B-52 bombers’ 55th year as the sky king, the Shreveport Amateur Radio Association and the 8th Air Force Museum at Barksdale Air Force Base plan to hold a special event this weekend.
A “Special Event Station” will operate from the museum grounds on the base Saturday and Sunday, a release from the association says.

Amateur radio enthusiasts who go the distance start their annual convention today at the Visalia Holiday Inn.
The International DX Convention, now in its 58th year, draws “hams” from Northern and Southern California, but also from as far away as South Africa, New Zealand, Japan or Italy, to learn new tips.
DX is radio lingo for “distance.”
DXers fire up their transmitters to talk to people halfway around the globe.

Weather service still needs volunteers on the ground
ELLENSBURG â€â€Ã‚ Â Â Â There are 57 volunteers in Kittitas County who keep their eyes on the sky, ready to call out at a moments notice if severe weather threatens life and property.
Bill Carter of Barnes Road, west of Ellensburg, is one of them  a Skywarn weather spotter.
“There are things happening out there the weather service really doesn’t know about, that don’t show up on their satellite images and radar,†Carter, 58, said this week. “That’s where the weather spotters come in. We can give them real-time observations that can complete the big picture of what’s happening.â€Â

AUGUSTA – Just in case disaster strikes, the governor’s at the ready with his radio.
To other amateur radio operators, or hams, he’s KBI-NXP. To everyone else, he’s Maine Gov. John Baldacci.
Baldacci said he was inspired to go for his federal amateur radio operator’s license when he observed the important role hams could play in January 1998 when Maine was wracked by disaster.

“I wanted to say hi to everyone at Kingston Elementary,” said the voice, projected across amateur radio from 200 miles above Florida. “It’s great to be here with you today.”
Floating aboard the International Space Station, astronaut Sunita “Suni” Williams was ready to take questions from 13 students lined up in the school’s multi purpose room. The principal and teachers selected the students, in grades three through five.

Researchers at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have achieved a new world record in high-frequency submillimeter waves. The record-setting 324-gigahertz frequency was accomplished using a voltage-controlled oscillator in a 90-nanometer complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit, a technology used in chips such as microprocessors.
The signal generator, which produces frequencies nearly 70 percent faster than other CMOS oscillators, paves the way for a new generation of submillimeter devices that could someday be used in high-resolution sensors on spacecraft, and here on Earth in a new class of highly integrated and lightweight imagers that could literally cut through fog and see through clothing fabrics. And because frequency ultimately means bandwidth, “the higher frequency increases the available bandwidth,” said M.C. Frank Chang, UCLA professor of electrical engineering, who leads the research team. That greater bandwidth translates into faster communication speeds.

Ham radio operators worldwide will be stationing themselves 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Branson Titanic Museum marking the 95th anniversary of the ship’s sinking.
The event, which began as a idea by four Nixa amateur radio operators, will honor the radio operators that issued the SOS.
Since getting approval with the museum the “titanichams†have gained response from hams worldwide.
