Kids Ham it up Worldwide over Airwaves

Voices of Texas students reach all the way to African island

by Bob Banta

Round Rock – It’s 3:30 p.m. at Deep Wood Elementary. Classes are over, but a dozen students huddled around a ham radio station aren’t eager to go home.

They’re busy talking to ham operators in Tennessee, Indiana, Minnesota, and Maryland.

“This is Kilo Charley Five Bravo Zulu Alpha — the Deep Wood Elementary Amateur Radio Club in Round Rock, Texas,” says 9-year-old Alex Paredes, rattling off his school’s call sign over the microphone like a pro.

Jim Elliott of Gambrills, Md., answers back, his voice deep and cheery amid the static that crackles through the radio speaker.

“Good afternoon, Round Rock,” Elliott says. “My name is Jim, and I am in the state of Maryland. And your signal is loud and clear.”

Busy Retiree Still Enjoys Being a Ham

by Betty Fleming
The Daily Times
- Salisbury, MD

When Joseph (Joe) Stormer, 62, was a child living on a dairy farm in Equinunk, Pa. and building crystal radios and Heathkits, he never dreamed that he’d be a licensed ham radio operator years later in his retirement, talking to people all over the world.

A college graduate with degrees in political science (BA) and public administration (MPA), Stormer also has a juris doctorate with distinction degree but never practiced law.

Instead, Stormer had a 36-year career in human resources in the federal government working for the personnel office of the Department of Defense. Twelve of those years were at the Pentagon in the office of the Secretary of Defense. He was also the human resources director of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration in the Department of Labor for two years. And, he served as a casualty affairs officer for the 9/11 families.

Reaching Out with Ham Radio

by Chauncey Alcorn
SanduskyRegister.com, Sandusky OH

MILAN – Dan Kovatch, 59, of Castalia, has been operating amateur, or “ham,” radios from home for years, but this weekend’s broadcast at the Milan Historical Museum was different.

“Q R Zed November India Eight Golf!,” Kovatch said as his voice and signal were broadcast across the country. “This is Dan operating from the Milan Historical society in Milan, Ohio, to commemorate the birth place of Thomas Edison.”

Sunday’s broadcast was the first official one for the Thomas Edison Memorial Radio Club, which was started in February 2006 by club president Jack Hubbard and secretary Dennis Sokol.

Ham Radio to Supplement Storm Communications

by Tim Donnelly
Beaufort Gazette,
Beaufort SC

While professional, state-of-the-art equipment will take center stage during the area’s recovery from a hurricane, an old hobbyist pastime just might come to the rescue if all else fails.

Hilton Head Island is joining a growing disaster preparation trend by installing amateur radios to use as a backup system if the multitude of other communications systems is knocked by a storm.

It’s the same system — ham radio — hobbyists around the world have used to talk to each other for almost 100 years. It’s also the same one that helped relay distress signals and emergency information during Hurricane Katrina and other disasters while other lines were down or jammed.
