95th Anniversary of Titanic Sinking

Ham radio operators worldwide will be stationing themselves 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Branson Titanic Museum marking the 95th anniversary of the ship’s sinking.

The event, which began as a idea by four Nixa amateur radio operators, will honor the radio operators that issued the SOS.

Since getting approval with the museum the “titanichams” have gained response from hams worldwide.

For example, organizers said that a Google search using the keywords of “Titanic- hams-W zero S,” — an abbreviation for White Star the Titanic’s parent company — returns more than 80 Web sites including Japanese-Italian-Russian relaying the news of the Branson event.

“We’ve been listed in Yachting Magazine, Golf Digest, and have been getting emails from Navy ships and others who plan to participate by radio around the world. The worldwide fascination with the Titanic is astonishing,” said Rod Kittleman, spokesperson for the group, in a news release.
