MARC Sponsored T-Hunt February 11, 2012

MARC Sponsored T-Hunt

The Mountain Amateur Radio Club will be putting on a T-hunt (transmitter hunt) on Saturday, February 11 at 10 AM, weather permitting. Starting location will be the Sierra Star parking lot in Oakhurst. It will be a little different than previous hunts in that there will be a real hidden transmitter. You will not be looking for a vehicle parked somewhere with the transmitter. The transmitter, IDer, and antenna will be placed along the side of a road (about 10 feet from the edge of the road) and left unattended until someone finds it. For this reason the use of an attenuator may prove very valuable when getting close to the transmitter.

CARP Helps with Communications for Bicycle Fundraising event in Sanger

Saturday January 28, 2012 members of the Clovis Amateur Radio Pioneers (CARP) assisted the Fresno County Bicycling Coalition (FCBC) with communications on a benefit bicycle ride. The Breaths for Evan benefit was to help the family of a child with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Sadly the child had passed prior to the event, but organizers continued with the event to not only raise money for the family but also for SMA research.

The ride consisted of two routes that began and finished at theSangerYouthCenter. CARP provided the needed communication betweenWintonParkand theSangerYouthCenter.WintonParkis in the foothills below Pine Flat dam and has no cell phone coverage cutting off the rest stop personnel from the event. The CARP repeater played well into the location and was instrumental in the communications effort.

Ham Radio in Hollywood: Amateur Radio Makes Its Debut on Last Man Standing

If you watched the January 3 episode of Last Man Standing — the ABC hit situation comedy starring Tim Allen as Mike Baxter, KA0XTT — you were in for a treat. While this episode didn’t feature Amateur Radio per se, it did show Mike’s shack in the background. Viewers could see the DXCC, Worked All States, Worked All Continents and the Morse Code Proficiency Certificate — all provided by the ARRL — in the first scene. Later on in the show, Mike records his video blog. Sharp-eyed viewers spotted the 2011 ARRL Handbook underneath the mini-tripod, next to issues of QST!

Ham Radio in Hollywood: Amateur Radio a Plot Point in Major Motion Picture

According to previews, the plot of the movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island — set to be released February 10 — hinges on Amateur Radio. The movie’s hero Sean Anderson (played by Josh Hutcherson) receives a coded distress signal that comes from a mysterious island where no island should exist. Sean decides to follow the signal with the unwilling assistance from his stepfather Hank (played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson).

Sean explains to Hank why he wants to hunt down the signal: “A few nights ago, a radio signal got sent out from these coordinates. It could be the mysterious island that Jules Verne wrote about.”

The DIY Magic of Amateur Radio

ARRL.org

ARRL Launches “Do It Yourself” Theme

There are a LOT of similarities between hams and the growing Do It Yourself (DIY), Maker communities. We can learn from each other and share tools and ideas in our enjoyment of creating things for ourselves and not simply purchasing mass-produced products.

ARRL’s new video, “The DIY Magic of Amateur Radio,” is an 8-minute video [hosted by Fashion Designer Diana Eng KC2UHB] that follows some of the innovative, imaginative and fun ways “hams” use radio technology in new and creative ways. The presentation is directed toward the DIY (do it yourself) movement, which is inspiring a new generation of creators, hackers and innovators. The message should be helpful for existing members to shape the ways they understand and talk about ham radio.
