444.725 High Level CARP Repeater Offline

Over the weekend the CARP High Level repeater on 444.725 suffered an equipment failure. Rob Mavis (AE6GE) and Patrick May (KI6QOH) went to the site to assess the problem with the repeater not transmitting, but was receiving just fine. Upon opening up the repeater a failed resistor in the PA was located. The PA was removed from the repeater and brought back down to Clovis for repair and testing. The repeater should be back up fairly soon.

Frequency Allocations iPhone App Available

March 21, 2010

Frequency Allocations App for iPhone and iPod Touch

Allocations, a new iPhone and iPod touch app for radio communication professionals and enthusiasts, is now available. Containing the entire U.S. Table of Frequency Allocations, Allocations is a convenient and portable electronic reference to allocated radio services and associated regulations across the entire radio spectrum from 9 kHz  to 275 GHz.

For example, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) depend on reliable access to the electromagnetic spectrum. Certain spectrum frequencies are sometimes referred to as bands and the amount of the spectrum needed to permit transmission of information is referred to as bandwidth.  Allocations for the federal government, non-federal-government, and all three ITU Regions are covered. For each allocated band, the full text of all relevant footnotes is included.

HO-68 operating schedule March 14-21

Alan Kung, BA1DU has announced the separate scheduling of Digital and FM repeater modes on the amateur radio satellite HO-68.

On the AMSAT Bulletin Board he writes:

I got a lot of responses about problem of digital mode through HO-68. The main problem is that Packet communication is often interrupted by voice. We are trying a new schedule in this week, voice and packet operations will be separated by the schedule, of course, this just depends on the hams’own discipline. If you have any comment and suggestion, please let me know.

Ham radio: Nerdy until there’s an emergency

FREMONT — The first Saturday of every month, Bernhard Hailer and his ham radio buddies go on a hunt.

With antennas made mostly of plastic pipes and metal tape measurers pointing out of car windows, they set off from Warren Avenue in Fremont and traverse Tri-City area streets trying to locate the signal emitted by a hidden transmitter the size of an envelope box.

The team that takes the shortest path to the transmitter gets bragging rights, but, in this game, everyone in the Tri-City area is a winner.

Simulated Repeater Failure Net 3/11/2010

CARP Net Control
March 3, 2010

Simulated Repeater Failure Net 3/11/2010

The Clovis Amateur Radio Pioneers Net for 3/11/2010 will be conducted as a simulated repeater failure net. The Net will be conducted on 147.675 MHz simplex at 19:00 local time. This net normally meets on the K6ARP Repeater system. We invite all amateurs in the area to take part in this Net.

After a power and subsequent generator failure during a powerful storm that caused a repeater outage at the high level repeter site, CARP has decided to have periodic simulated Repeater Failure Nets.

Net control station for this net will be Patrick May, KI6QOH located in Clovis near Gettysburg/Fowler. Stations with directional antennas should orient them in that direction. Stations should take note of stations that check-in but are not recognized by Net Control and relay that station to net control when the relaying station is called.
