Services are Sept. 25 for Amand Leonard Lamont, who died Sept. 17 at his home in Clovis. He was 88. A native of Belgium, Mr. Lamont moved to Watson­ville when he was 2 years old. He graduated from Wat­sonville High School before enlisting in the Army and serving in the Pacific dur­ing World War II.

CARP T-Hunt Results – September 19, 2009

img_3215_0This Saturday morning was the latest  Clovis Amateur Radio Pioneers (CARP) Transmitter hunt.ClovisFest was going on this day so the start point of the hunt was moved to Letterman Park in Clovis.

Patrick KI6QOH and Duane KI6QEL won the last transmitter hunt and the privilege of being the Fox for today’ hunt.  Today’s hunt was limited to a radius of 7.5 miles from the start point.

Wildfires Among Education Topics of NOAA’s
Hazardous Weather Awareness Week in California

The NOAA National Weather Service forecast offices serving California will host the third annual Hazardous Weather Awareness Week for the Golden State, Sept. 21-26, 2009. During the week, meteorologists will educate the public about the dangers of severe weather in California and encourage them to take action when life and property are at risk.

“Preparing for hazardous weather begins with knowing what type of dangerous weather your community is prone to, having an emergency kit on-hand and developing and practicing a plan for what to do during a weather emergency,” said Bob Tibi, director of the National Weather Service’s Western Region. “Stay abreast of quickly changing weather situations through local news and NOAA Weather Radio and heed all orders issued by local officials.”

There will be 30 new caches placed throughout the City of Clovis all with an FTF (First to Find) trinket guaranteeing you the prize set aside for that specific cache. Not to worry though, if you’re not FTF you still get a raffle ticket for every cache you find good for the general raffle. So the more you find the more chances you have to win! Please obey all traffic laws as we want this to be a positive experience for all. When you sign in you will receive a passport to stamp at each location you visit. There will be a different stamp in each container and you must stamp your passport to receive credit for finding the cache. The number of stamped locations in your passport will determine the number of raffle tickets you will receive.

Flight of Experimental Weather Balloon a Near Picture-Perfect Success

In Ron Meadows’ mind, his helium weather balloon journey, which began Saturday morning from his San Jose driveway and ended when the balloon landed about 125 miles away in Merced, was a near picture-perfect success.

Launched south of Los Banos, his balloon soared nearly 20 miles high and had only one slight hitch. Cameras attached to the balloon snapped photographs of the earth as planned. And the ham radio tracking system that the 53-year-old pool-service owner built himself enabled him to track where the soaring balloon was all day long.

San Jose Pool Man Prepares to Launch

Before dawn today, Ron Meadows and his chase team plan to gather in the driveway of his Cambrian home on their way to the launch site. The equipment from his swimming pool service business will have been unloaded from his pickup truck and replaced with the day’s precious cargo:

Weather balloon? Check. Helium tanks? Check. Simplex repeater? Check.
