Ham Radio Operators Shoot for the Moon
Scores of Bay Area ham radio operators will aim high this weekend to see who can bounce their signals off the moon in an effort to talk to friends far away.
It won’t be an easy feat; it has never been tried before, said Doug Teter, a computer cable specialist who is coordinating the effort led by the Palo Alto Amateur Radio Alliance, but alliance members will have a go at it, competing to see who can be the first to talk to a friend on the other side of the United States or Canada.

When the Federal Government Stepped In
The Federal Communications Commission was created on June 19, 1934, and thus marks its 75th anniversary this month. A recent article in Radio World discussed whether the FCC is still relevant. Here, we look back to its roots.
In the beginning, there was a ponderous cacophony and great confusion.
Radio, basically in the form of broadband brute force spark transmissions, had been around since the turn of the 20th century. Some businesses made use of radio for dispatching ships and reporting meteorological conditions, others engaged in the transmission of personal and commercial messages for profit; but the simple truth was that anyone could build and operate a wireless station.

Fireworks Fundraising Event
The Clovis Amateur Radio Pioneers fireworks stand begins Sunday June 28th. The club’s annual fundraising event will run through July 4th. The stand is located on the north/west corner of Clovis and Shaw Avenues, in the Carl’s Jr. Parking lot.
In previous years the fundraising event has brought needed money to help support and expand the club’s repeater system and club activities. Members are encouraged to volunteer time to help man the stand. Even if you can not support the club by working the stand, come out and purchase some fireworks to support your club.
While fireworks can only be sold during the week leading up to the fourth of July, it is legal in the City of Clovis to set off fireworks year round.

We were gathered to set up the 23 CM equipment for a “shake down test” . For the “Echoes of Apollo” event June 26-28, 2009.

Radio Hams to Rescue
Amitabh Bachchan is one. So is Rahul Gandhi. And we aren’t talking politics or films.
They are radio hams — amateur radio operators who facilitate a two-way communication using radio waves. Most radio hams have full-fledged jobs and ham only as a hobby. One needs to clear an examination and get a licence to become a radio ham.
